Is winter over yet? Of course not, but there is ... Live jazz in ROC, January 19-25

Jazz club signThe listings are still kind of light this week, but that's not too unusual this time of year. It's cold out there! I'm still recovering from a concussion after last week's icy Tuesday (amazed I was able to do the post last week... much better today!). I'm hoping to get out on Sunday to hear Ethnic Heritage Ensemble at Lovin Cup. Say hi if you see me!

Would you like to see a more vibrant jazz community for live jazz here in Rochester?  I'm trying to help build one here, so please give me a hand. I'd love it if you'd share this site with friends and family who are similarly inclined to go out to hear some live jazz. They can find out all the ways to get you some JazzRochester goodness by checking my post laying it out for you. I'd also like to call your attention to my pretty new sharing buttons that are floating on the left of your screen. Please share the blog on your favorite platform with those buttons, or share a particular post with the buttons at the bottom of the post.

As always, let me know if any gigs below are no longer happening, if I got something wrong wrong, or if you have heard of something that's not in these listings so I can add it.

Ice, ice baby, but there is ... Live jazz in ROC, January 12-18

Jazz 1-way sign

It's light this week. Good thing as I'm limited due to a bump on my noggin after a fall on yesterday's ice and staring at the computer screen is no fun. By the way, last week I was too optimistic about the transition of ownership of the Pythodd Jazz Room in Charlotte being sold. Since then I've heard that the space is probably going to become a Mexican restaurant and likely will not be presenting jazz.  Oh well... like I said then, perhaps more about this later... Let me know if you've heard differently.

A little less, a little more ... Live jazz in ROC, January 5-11

Jazz sign

While right after the holidays is often light, the few gigs around over the next seven days reminds me how hard it is out there to present live jazz. We're seeing less and possibly more of it around ROC right now (perhaps more about this later).  Some of you may have heard that the Pythodd Jazz Room in Charlotte has closed. While that is true (explaining why there are no listings below), it appears from a note on their website that there are new owners of the club and the closure may be temporary.  On the plus side, the Brass Bar & Lounge on Alexander and East in the city is starting a Friday jazz happy hour beginning this Friday. Support live jazz by getting out to hear some (OK, OK, I have to get out more too....).

Jazz 90.1 top has listed its 100 top Cds for 2016 (pdf). What was your favorite new jazz CD in 2016?

Eastman School of Music has announced that jazz keyboardist Gary Versace has joined the faculty of their  Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media Department. Hope to hear more from this great musician in ROC as a result?

2016 see ya! Now I wonder whether there will be ... live jazz in ROC December 29th to January 4, 2017?

As you know, for me 2016 hasn't been the best year.  I'm looking forward to 2017 and here it comes.  As this is a holiday, please take some of the listings below with a grain of salt. Call the venue first to make sure.  I'm sure there's some jazz out there at various New Years Eve parties, but have listed the ones I'm aware of.

Listen on January 3d (starting early, like 6:00 am) to our local jazz radio spot, Jazz90.1, as they bring you the Top 40 CD’s from the Top 100 of 2016, as voted on by their staff and volunteers.  Also, check out their lineup changes for 2017.

Ho, ho, ho, there is... Live jazz in ROC, December 22-28

Christmas is coming and there will be jazz. Here's the next seven days of live jazz in and around Rochester.  Of course it is pretty light this week (they have families too!).  Additionally, around any holiday it is a good idea to call ahead to the venue to make sure, especially on the gigs below that repeat.  Hope you and yours have a great holiday!
